FORMER BRYNE DEFENDER ON THE WAY TO FFK?

Former Bryne defender Krister Wemberg will be on trial with Fredrikstad this week ahead of a potential move to the OBOS Ligaen side.

Wemberg was a part of the Bryne side that suffered relegation to the 2.Divisjon last season and will be hoping Fredrikstad can offer him an instant route back to the Norwegian second tier.

Fredrikstad have already bolstered their ranks for next season with two signings, defender Edvard Skagestad from Aalesund and midfielder Joona Veteli from Finnish side PS Kemi.

The Wemberg link came as a surprise to many FFK fans and most were relatively bemused about the standard of player they were apparently looking at. Bryne conceded 48 goals in their 30 games last season and with Wemberg on the pitch, Bryne kept just 3 clean sheets in 25 games.

Previously, Wemberg has played with Moss, Molde and Bodo/Glimt before signing for Bryne in 2013. He has always been a semi-regular in the side but last season was the first in which he held down a starting berth for most of the season.

Having watched Wemberg last year, I have to say I am disappointed that Fredrikstad are looking to sign him. Wemberg could do a job for most bottom half of the table OBOS Ligaen teams, but with Fredrikstad planning for a promotion push, I simply cannot see Wemberg being good enough to help with this challenge.

After the signings of Skagestad and Veteli, this move for Wemberg is a step in the wrong direction. Whoever scouted Wemberg for Fredrikstad must have realised that Wemberg’s partner in the Bryne defence, Torstein Mjonner, was a much better option despite an up & down season.

Mjonner had a poor year for Bryne on the whole, but the talent is undeniably there and if Fredrikstad really want to bolster their defence with a Bryne player, then Mjonner should be their man. Especially now that he moves back to his home-area, and would offer a cheaper solution as a potential new signing for the red and whites.

As reported by Fotballkanalen two days ago, Fredrikstad are on the verge of losing a lot of their defensive players including Sansara, Straith and Tonne. With so many players potentially leaving, it seems that next season could be yet another rebuilding job for new boss Andrea Loberto.

Et bedre alternativ:
OBOS-liga ekspert Ben Wells mener Wembergs stopperkollega Torstein Mjønner er et bedre alternativ for Fredrik. Her stiger han til værs i kampen mot Raufoss tidligere i år. (Foto: Digitalsport)
